French music: What makes it so great?
The long history of French music begins with court songs and gallant music in the 10th century. Much of early French folk music was instrumental, with few and rudimentary instruments; nevertheless, from the 10th century, a group of poet-composers began their work. From then on, France has a rich musical history that includes everything from opera to classical music to pop and rock in the twentieth century. France's music encompasses a wide range of styles. In the sphere of classical music, France has produced some notable romantic composers, while the chanson and cabaret styles have gained popularity in folk and popular music. The phonautograph, the world's first known sound recording device, was invented in France by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville in 1857. France is also the world's fifth-largest market in terms of value, and the French music business has produced a number of globally recognized musicians, particularly in the fields of nouvelle chanson and electron
